It seems like these days everyone is ditching the junk food and unhealthy choices and opting for a more well balanced healthy and nutritious diet. As well as scheduling regular workouts on their calendars and living more active lifestyles. Some trends may be here to stay, while others may just be temporary. Here’s an overview on the health and wellness trends that seem to be hot these days, and those that are not.
Sugar Detox
It used to be that low to no carb diets were all the craze the health gurus raged about. These days however it appears to be sugar that is hitting the chopping block. The report in JAMA Internal medicine that the sugar industry paid off scientists in the 1960s to play down the link between sugar and heart disease and to instead pin the blame on fat and saturated fat, people have started to realize that consuming large amounts of sugar is not healthy for the body and that it leads to inflammation and cardiovascular disease.
Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy has been around for quite a while now, but it is only in the last couple of years that Cryo shops have begun popping up everywhere and spike in Google searches for Cryotherapy has occurred. Cryotherepy is basically the process of exposing the body to ultra low temperatures in a controlled environment for a very limited amount of time. It causes the stimulation of receptors that activates a central nervous system response and begins releasing endorphines. It is suppose to help your body recover quicker after extreme workouts.
Slime
Slime has apparently taken the place of stress balls. Just do a simple Instagram search for #slim and you’ll see countless photos of people playing with slime. Watching and touching slime are said to be super addictive and it is suppose to help release stress and tension.
One-Bowl Meals
People are really enjoying the one-bowl meals like Poke and Acai Bowls where you basically choose your healthy ingredients and it all gets mixed in a bowl for you. It appears this new one-meal bowl trend is only the beginning as larger national chains are sure to start jumping on this bandwagon.
Frozen Yogurt
It was once thought that frozen yogurt was a healthier option for you. However, now it appears that even with probiotics in it that it generally has far less of the beneficial bacteria than regular non-frozen yogurt. So the verdict is in. Frozen Yogurt is not a healthier option, especially with all the toppings that are put on it.
Meatless Burger
With more and more people switching to a vegan diet and Google trends seeing an alternative called the impossible burger the traditional burger may die out. The entirely plant-based burger is called the Impossible Burger because it has achieved the impossible feat of looking, sizzling, and even bleeding like meat. Compared to cows, the Impossible Burger uses 95% less land, 74% less water, and creates 87% less greenhouse gas emissions, and it’s 100% free of hormones, antibiotics, and artificial ingredients. Now that just might be a great burger alternative that you can sink your teeth in to.
“Ugly” Fruits and Vegetables
There has been a more conscious effort to not throw away food that aside from it’s ugly shape is otherwise a perfectly good fruit or vegetable. Retailers typically throw out fruits and vegetables that don’t look appealing to the eye. However new companies have began picking up those foods from retailers and selling them rather than throwing them out. It would appear imperfect is the new hip.
The Ketogenic Diet
It would appear the health and wellness trend has shifted form paleo to Keto. A ton of Instagram accounts, Facebook pages, and Cookbooks have popped up for this new diet. The Keto diet basically trains your body to rely on fat instead of glucose for fuel. By restricting your carb intake your body goes into a metabolic state which is called ketosis and causes your body to produce ketones from fat that is then used as energy. There have been a number of high profile Doctors who have praised the diet because restricting your body from fat starves the brain which is 60% fat.
