Summer Fun + Vacation Travels
I recently had the opportunity to attend a local charity fundraiser. During the live auction I was the winning bidder for a three night stay at a beach house in Rockport, TX. So it’s travel time by the beach again. Rockport is located along the gulf coast in Aransas County in Texas. Born and Raised in South Texas I am very familiar with the gulf coast from Corpus Christi all the way down to S. Padre Island. However, I don’t think I’ve ever been to Rockport before so I decided to do a little research before we head out there. I was able to find a couple of points of interest in Rockport which I’m happy to share with you.
Fulton Mansion Historical Site
The Fulton Mansion is registered with the National Register of Historic Places. Construction on the home was completed in 1877 and owned by Colonel George Ware Fulton and Harriet Gillette Smith. The architectural style of this home is Second Empire which was apparently a pretty popular style in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The style is derived from that of the architectural elements used during the Second French Empire. During the time the home was built it featured the “most up to date conveniences” such as indoor plumbing reaching every sink in every bedroom. Imagine that – indoor plumbing. Oh the luxuries we have today compared to the people of the past.
This is definitely a place I want to check out. I am a huge history buff, and there is nothing more exciting for me than history and the high seas. They are currently housing an exhibit from five Texas Shipwrecks from the 1554 shipwrecks to the Civil War era – USS Westfield, and featuring artifacts from the LaBelle Shipwreck, the Pass Cavallo Privateer Shipwreck, and the Monterey Shipwreck which was recently discovered.
Here we can just relax under the pavilions, go swim in the water, or let the kids go play at the playground they have. According to the reviews I found they have clean restrooms and showers to rinse off the salt water when you are done swimming in the ocean. You can also fish from the pier or wade in the water and fish from there. It is apparently only about 45 minutes away from Corpus Christi, so maybe I can drop in to my old neighborhood for a visit.
I’m sure we’ll find plenty of other stuff to do while we are there. What I am looking most forward to is the fresh seafood. There is something about the smell and taste of fresh seafood that takes me back to my childhood memories in South Texas at S. Padre Island with the family and having fun.
Drop me a line and let me know if you’ve been to Rockport before and any recommendations you have.
